Over the course of her 44-year career in education, Phyllis J. Fread established her high school’s foreign student exchange program, attained
the position of dean of students, and granted scholarships as an associate of the Ford Family Foundation. She began by teaching French and Spanish at
George Washington Junior High School in Seattle, then found her way to Roseburg High School, where she would spend most of her career as a
foreign language instructor, foreign student nurturer, and dean of students from 1960 to 1980. She rounded out her career as a French instructor
at Umpqua Community College. She also served as the team leader of the Ford Family Foundation’s scholarship program selection committee.
