I think as an educator, in my field, that a resume should be weighed equally based on educational background and work experience. It is very difficult at times to climb the latter though to higher job positions such as a curriculum instructor if you…

Do I need a Cover Letter with my Resume?

YES!

I was recently told by an employer that he had received hundreds of resumes, and could only remember one that had a cover letter. He still remembers that person today.

Think about it like this. When you first meet someone, the first thing you do is introduce yourself. You don't just walk up and toss out your life history without an introduction. Why would you do that with your resume?

Your resume and the cover letter are your introduction. Everything about the overall presentation, from… Continue

Why can't I get to the Interview?

Because -

The Typical Résumé Only Receives About 10-20 Seconds of Attention

You think that after all the time, effort, sweat equity and frustration you put into the preparation of your résumé, it will be received with open arms by the person or company representative you took the time to send it to. You picture the “target” individual opening up the email or envelope with anticipation, and their eyes opening wide, impressed beyond belief as they take their first look at the result of your effo… Continue

Prepare for the Interview!

Congratulations! You got the interview – but now there is more work to be done before you can afford to celebrate. Getting your foot in the door is half the battle, and to win the reward you must be prepared to stand out above the competition. The average job seeker will tell you that if they can just get their foot in the door - they will perform well in the interview. (Ask the average employer - and they will tell you this is not true!).

Preparation will sometimes be the determi… Continue

The Objective Statement is Outdated......

If you are like most job seekers, the first thing you do when you set out on a job search is update your résumé. Typically, this will mean a quick review of the contact information, adding the most recent employment experience, and updating any educational accomplishments. Then you will set aside a moment to review your objective statement, carefully pondering the strategy you will use to tell the potential employer exactly what you hope to achieve within the scope of the next employment opportu… Continue

I Discovered Another Great Avenue to Market Professional Services!

The internet is saturated with various means designed to promote the services of professionals and business owners, so you have to imagine my surprise at locating another great resource to generate a larger client base.

Typically, I view some of these resources with the same disdain I place on those emails that inform me of the impending loss of a windfall inheritance by a long lost ancestor. However, when I am able to contact and screen other service providers in my career field about their ex… Continue

Hi Lisa!
I just 'stumbled upon' your essay on the subject of "expert" which is extraordinarily insightful!
I now have an inkling as to my current status - check out My Page.
BTW We are moving into the pleasant time of the year here in North Central Florida where you have roots. I just came from Shands in Gainesville where my biker friend has been recovering from a rough accident. Please be careful.
Keep up the good work. I believe that more and more people will be requiring your services.
I believe that's true of what I have to offer as well.
Best,
Claire.

LISA,
IT WAS GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU. EVEN THOUGH OUR BUSINESS IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS I HAVE MET THROUGH WHO'S WHO, I HAVE A HEART & PASSION FOR PEOPLE!!!! I BELIEVE THERE IS SO MUCH OUT THERE IF WE JUST GO FOR IT! AS I SAID I KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF A PROPER RESUME IT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE OF BEING CONSIDERED FOR A JOB OR PUT TO THE SIDE . I HAVE DONE RESUMES MYSELF OVER THE YEARS WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR A CHANGE IN LIFE & PATY TIME WORK, NO IT WAS NOT MY LINE OF EXPERTISE. I AM A MORE ONE ON ONE PERSON THAN RESUME WRITER. FUNNY THING IS I DO LOVE TO WRITE. I HAVE HAD SUCH A COLORFUL LIFE, ROSE APOVE MANY NEGATIVE CIRCUMASTANCES THROOUGHOUT MY ENTIRE LIFE BUT CHOSE TO TURN THOSE NEGATIVES INTO POSTIVE. I HAVE OFTEN BEEN TOLD I HAVE A TALENT TO WRITE AND SHOULD ACTUALLY WRITE A BOOK ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE. IT WOULD BE DEDICATED TO HELP & MOTIVATE OTHERS TO BE ALL THAT GOD HAS CREATED THEM TO BE AND TO TO LEARN TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES. I JUST KEEP SUCH A WILD SCHEDULE BETWEEN THE GARAGE, TAKING CARE OF OUR HOME ENTIRELY SO MY HUSBAND CAN FOCUS ON THE GARAGE MECHANICS THAT LIFE GETS ALITTLE CRAZY HERE. PRESENTLY I HAVE BEEN SICK WHICH HAS BEEN THE NORMAL FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS @ THIS TIME. IF I DID NOT MENTION I AM IN THE MRS. PA INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT AT THE END OF MARCH AND GETTING READY TO DO BUSINESS TAXES WHICH IS TOTALLY MY DEPARTMENT. THE LORD CARRIES ME THROUGH AS I HAVE EXTREME FAITH AND THAT IS HOW I LIVE MY LIFE. HOPE TO TALK TO YOU SOON. IF YOU EVER JUST WANT TO EMAIL ME STRAIGHT MY ADDRESS IS:

DO TAKE CARE & GOD BLESS!
