New fall prevention exercise class in South Sacramento

Some of you may be aware that I recently graduated from Sac State with a Special Master of Science in Therapeutic Aging. Like most (post-bachelor) graduates, I am seeking full-time employment (aka, a career position) with a company, a career that offers full benefits and the room for growth. Excuse me but like most American citizens, I find the list of job opportunities that offer a competitive salary and full-time benefits to be…See More

Fall prevention politicial activist?

During my fall prevention exercise research study, I had the opportunity to meet some of the most dynamic older adults possible. In fact, each one of my 30 study participants touched me in a very special way and I hope to keep in touch with everyone over the years. There is one lady in particular who just makes my heart smile. She was the first person in the study group, the first one to complete the three levels of the… Continue

Balance and vestibular impairment

I’m not a doctor but as a certified FallProof™ balance and mobility instructor, I am trained to test the integrity of the different body systems involved in balance. Wow Kelly, you truely inspire me. I am new to CWW and I'm just now learning how to navigate my way around. In addition to being an RN, I've worked in the health and fitness industry for 25 years in Africa, England, and now in the USA. I am so very passionate about living and teaching a healthy lifestyle, and truely believe that the lifestyle diseases that plague our world - hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiac disease, obesity; can be prevented by simply making healthier choices.

I work in a hospital and therefore I am very familiar with falls that occure on the floors. I think that the work you do regarding this particular problem is very inspiring.

Charles, I am sorry to hear about your father. You're right, ALS is a dastardly process. I cannot imagine the horror a person must feel. Stretching is always good to minimize shortening and tightening of the muscles but honestly, I do not have hands on experience with ALS. I'm certain his doctors and physical therapists are doing everything they can to maintain his quality of life. Or at least I hope they are.
My prayers are with you, your father and your family.

No question. He is terrifyed of it. ALS ( Lou Gehrigs) is such a deceitfull and dastardly process. He is losing his ability to walk rapidly, so falling may be less of a risk.

thanks for your input

Thanks Claire for the insight. It is all about balance! While eating the right foods is the first step to health, a person must effectively train the 3 body systems responsible for staying upright. Balance training the visual, vestibular and somatosensory systems now, when able, make adjusting to impairment later easier. My 3-hour/3 CEU Take 5 to Exercise workshop introduces appropriate exercises for each.

Hi Kelly, In my award-winning book I spell out in great dtail that I fell many times. Now on a high level natural lifestyle I fall no more. I invite you to check out www.preservedtoserve.com and learn that balancing my blood chemistry is the key.

Kelly, have you heard of the book, Pain Free? The man that founded the book has his office in the southern California area. I have been training for a marathon and had "hip" issues and a friend recommended this book and philosophy or exercises for allignment. I found it very helpful, easy and fascinating.
