What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about social studies education for all students in the United States. I believe every person has the right to an education, and teachers have the right to think outside the box to reach their students. In today's complex society, it is more critical than ever for children and adults to be aware of what is going on in the world, how the past connects to the present, and what ordinary citizens can do to make their communities a better place. I am dedicated to working in any field possible to spread the word of how important history, arts, and the humanities are in American education today.
What makes you a valuable networking contact?
I am a passionate teacher, researcher, and writer with a lot to offer and much to learn. I want to hone my existing skills as an educator and curriculum developer, and learn new skills concerning administration and eventually take on a leadership role in schools. I am hard working, dedicated to team work and collaboration, and would be a valuable networking contact for others who share the same passion for education as I do.
How did you become involved in your current position? If you’re an entrepreneur, what inspired you to start your own company?
I have always wanted to be a teacher or work in the education field. I was inspired at a young age to love and appreciate music and history, and it made sense for me to pursue these interests professionally. I hold professional teaching certification in social studies, have experience teaching music and social studies, and a Master's of Art degree in History. I was hired by the New York City Department of Education, and found my current job at a DOE job fair in Brooklyn. I have been teaching at my current school for four years.
Offering (Products, services, expertise, etc. you or your company can offer others)
I am a life long learner who has specialized in social studies education. I can offer a breadth of services concerning curriculum development and lesson planning for other social studies teachers or company that deals with education.
Seeking (Products, services, expertise, etc. you or your company are looking for)
I am relocating to Atlanta, Georgia in the summer of 2010 and will be seeking employment as a teacher or any related field. Networking with people who share similar passions and goals as me would be greatly appreciated, for I am very worried about leaving my current job with the economy being in the state that it's in. I'm relocating to Atlanta because I'm getting married in July 2010, and my fiance's job just moved him there. I want to be both a contributor to our household and continue building upon my career.

Only eight months to go! Yes, the view is spectacular from the top of Todt Hill -
the second highest point on the Eastern seaboard.
What I like about Connect is that I have many colleagues some of whom I do business with and some I get to socialize with. I think it's fantastic!

Yes!
That is why both of my weddings were in July - the one to Mr. Murphy was on July 3rd.
You may say we started off with a bang!
Sadly, I am a widow, but, I still have a romantic heart.

Yes, indeed!
My son went to Staten Island Academy for two years! I recall sleigh riding with him and Mr. Murphy down Todt Hill. The road is tough navigating in the winter, though.
Glad it's a summer wedding!

Wonderful!
I married my first husband on July 16th and his birthday was on July 18th - no kidding.
So will the wedding be on The Island or in Atlanta?

Hi Katherine, Thanks for the comprehensive update!
A water main EXPLODED? I am not surprised. They are in poor shape all across the nation!
One of the reasons i left Staten Island was my family's involvement on 9/11 and the constant reminder of the event. See: www.selfrej.com Services A Free Essay.
Yes, I'm aware "Bloomie" bought the third term - contrary to the wishes of the voters. Bill Thompson is a good man. i watched him in action as a member of the then Board of Education of The City of New York who subsequently rose to its Chancellorship and then became Comptroller of The City of New York - a most qualified candidate who would have been a decided boon for NYC educators!
BTW - Did you hear of the boondoggle last week when all 53,000 of we teacher retirees had our pension money lifted from our bank accounts - causing all kinds of confusion? What next?

I hear it's getting chilly in Staten Island. Last year I visited a friend in Huguenot to celebrate my birthday during Thanksgiving week. Has everyone there calmed down about the tragic loss we suffered on 9/11? I'll be up north next week to spend Thanksgiving with my son and his lovely bride of one year. i'm already gathering my gloves and warm jacket (hardly ever used here in Florida).
Bet you're looking forward to the Thanksgiving breakl. I read an interesting survey recently that Thanksgiving is now considered a two day holiday (Thursday and Friday) by most. And I thought we teachers had a monopoly on that one. :-)
Best,
Claire
