Congratulations, Rev. Grey, on your book. I would also agree that writing your feelings down helps to confront them so you can sort them out and see what can be done to change your circumstances.

Me, too, Anne Kathleen. I hate sad endings. They keep me awake at night.

This is one of my "tails": It started out as an ordinary day. I went down to the barn. The three horses were grazing on the lush green pasture. Then Dutch lay down. Normal, I thought. He began to roll, got up, but went down again, rolled,…

I am anticipating 'a tale' or shall I say tail, straight from the horse's mouth.

I think that you are right, Patty. From the horse's mouth is the best way to recount numerous 'tails' that would be both sad, exciting and humorous. Plus, it gives me a timeline that I can follow without having to follow my own. A…

That's so exciting, Patty. I can imagine how happy everyone was for that little boy. Being involved with horses does so many great things. Ollie is an adorable name, too.

In Greenwich, CT, I used to volunteer for Pegasus. The horse I took for the autistic kids was named Ollie. When a little boy who had not spoken for years said, "Walk on, Ollie," we all burst into tears.

That's true, Patty. I think horses are just like people; they have different talents and it's a matter of finding their niche. On the Pegasus Riding website, they have little bios of the horses and many of them were former show horses or…

Suggestion: Write from the horse's point of view...often your tale will be sad. But that is the point! Winning is great when it happens. But that is not always the case. If they don't run with the required speed, find them another job. My…

Thanks, Patricia and Deanie. I have thought of doing this many times, especially as I wrote my Honors Anthropology thesis on the backstretch of a racetrack and subsequently spent so many years in the Industry with some very colorful and well-known…

Yes, Anne. Perhaps you too might consider writing perosnal stories and get them published in magazines and papers. To tell the story from a personal (in this case equine) point of view has much more credance and emotional power and can lead others…

Yes, some of the things that happen on the racetrack are terribly sad. But at least there are stronger rules against using drugs now. Every advancement will help. It's horrible that people can be so greedy and not consider the welfare of their…

Yes, great insight, Anne. I got out of racing when I found out what so many were doing to their horses before a race. My guys ran because they wanted to and never before they were 3. One, Risky Ronnie, did not race until he was almost 5.…

Why is Dialogue Important to your Children's Story?

We’ve talked about some important ingredients for your children’s story. Today we’re going to discuss dialogue and how important it is to your successful story.

First, it’s important to remember that you don’t want to write lots of chatter that doesn’t advance the story. It needs to have a purpose that advances your story plot. Why does this matter? Well, for one thing, many young readers check out the dialogue before they choose to purchase the book. They want to know if it looks…

Four Easy ways to get Ideas for Children's Stories

One of the most common problems writers have is coming up with a good idea for a children’s story. Where do these ideas come from? Don’t you wish there was a little idea elf who stopped by whenever you need him? Let’s discuss some ways to find good ideas.

I think a good place to start is your own experiences. Did something happen to change the course of your life? That was the case for my book, Tails of Sweetbrier.  The decision my dad made to teach me…

Creating Memorable characters for Children's stories

Today we’re going to discuss characterization. What is that? It’s the art of creating a person for your story. You’ll need to describe your character’s personality traits and physical attributes so that your reader will relate well with him. The more completely you develop your characters, the more interesting your story will become.  You’ll want to be as creative as you can so that your characters aren’t too ordinary, or boring.

What kind of main character should you…

Conflict, Exactly What is That?.

One of the keys to a successful children’s story is conflict. What exactly is that? Do your characters have to be engaged in a knock down drag out fight? No, but one of the building blocks of a good story is a struggle of some sort. Usually, the main character has to be involved in the conflict you develop. Another word for a conflict is a problem that involves the main character. Why does it need to be the main character? Generally, the main…

I do belong to our local chapter of Yellow Ribbon .  This group was started by the First lady of Minn. and helps out families of deployed soldiers. If you would like to donate some books to be given out to the families I could do that.
