As a former "Fort Apache" resident myself....when I was in school, the teachers had you turn to a page or chapter and had a discussion Today they have you go to a chapter, read it, and when you get home, write about it, then turn it in,…

Hi, Karen, Just this thought. Sometimes we can make things too complicated. (The Education Establishment encourages this, I think, for many bad reasons.) Good poetry is tough; it can take of itself. Just pass it on. Read the poem (with pleasure).…

I feel that making learning FUN and what feelings each child has is a good way to introduce poetry, rhymes are easy for ESE children and younger children to grasp. I would call it a Daily Journal, where the child writes and draws a thought , or a…

I write about these issues all the time. As part of forcing Look-Say into the schools from 1931 onward, the top educators forced nursery rhymes and easy poetry OUT of the schools. These ideologues didn't want children reading at a high level…

If I were a cow out in the field, I’d tell you with outright glee
Of a gal who is a pretty good heifer, Lisa, Moo-Moo Marie

I like it when she starts to talk, for it is such a beautiful sound
Her words are sweeter than alfalfa grass, that shoots up from the ground

If I were placed inside a stall, I’d still be just as free
For I’m never afraid to be caged, with, Lisa, Moo-Moo Marie

She’s busier than a herd of bulls, trekking on a long cattle drive
Yet she always has plenty of time, for my irritating rawhide

As we grow older, faces being thinner, our eyes barely able to see
I’d have such a thrill, just being still, with, Lisa Moo-Moo Marie

Strolling with her on a dirt trail, side-by-side, and neck-to-neck
I’d gladly breath a ton of dust, just to join her in the trek

And when we get processed at the butcher shop, in Heaven I’d like to be
With the best little cowgirl I ever met, Lisa, Moo-Moo Marie

Lisa, Moo-Moo Marie

Dear DE Navarro,

Than you for the friend request. I have heard of NavWorks Press before, I just don't remember where. :-) I'm sorry it took so long for me to get back to you but I really have been extremely busy. I haven't done a lot of writing lately except for college papers! lol! I have begun attending Case Western Reserve University to obtain my Master's degree. I look forward to talking with you one to one, but will not be following conversations online now because there are just too many to keep up with and keep up with everything else I must do regularly as well. My email is: my 3 am idea and you will find me on yahoo. I wrote it like that just to be sure the sensors don't pick it up and get things messed up. You know how to do the rest. I am on face book as well. I write children"s books and poetry and am trying my hand at a fantasy novel. I am not looking for a publisher that wants to print my material if I pay for it to be printed. I don't have any money, so I have not been published yet. Maybe someday... lol! Thank you once again. Dear DE,
Not exactly my topic (getting children to like poetry); but my instinct and experience tell
me that there has to be a multi-sensory experience: hear it (Cat in The Hat, etc.); get
the rhythm of the piece by clapping it out, nodding the head or somesuch, and writing one's own in any form that feels comfortable, and most of all, fun. Then reading one's own
writing aloud.
Over the last 15 years or so, I have greatly enjoyed writing haiku (over 1000 of them) and
with a distinctly American style, i.e. human nature, not just nature/nature. Some have been published here and there, some are in groups dealing with a healing process, and so on. I have thought of publishing them (selectively edited), and might be interested in self-publishing. I do have a nascent blog that could be a starter place:
http://niborblog-freebyrd.blogspot.com
The other writings that are partially ready for publishing are a series of health columns
written for a local women's paper - these are also intended for the blog, but are not online yet - it's been a bumpy last few months! I'd appreciate any comments you might have on self-publishing. Thanks. robin birdfeather
