I want to add one additional note to this discussion, January 23, 2012. A year ago I had not reached this conclusion. But now I'm comfortable saying that not only are public schools deliberately dumbed down, they're also debased on…

Just one set note: there is an epidemic of cheating in public schools, and in colleges and grad schools. More than 100 sites sell phony essays. My worry is that the schools look the other way, because the school wants to have so-called good grades.…

What is meant by the arts?? Art history? Too soon. Putting up an easel and painting? Also too soon. (I've thought a lot about this because Ken Robinson and his Creativity Curriculum are ballyhooed all over the place. I worry that he uses it to…

Been thinking. Seems to me it would be faster and deeper to tell them the latest research, and then invite them to demolish it. This is how I spend every day. Why a team? At some point, people need to think for themselves.    Bruce

I just redesigned my lit site (Lit4u.com). Main thing other writers might want to know is that there are many companies offering sophisticated site-building services, for free or low cost. I checked Wix and Weebly, but ended up using Jimdo. It takes…

DHD is very smart. I second every word.  I'm just now writing an article about the epidemic of cheating. This seems to have happened as part of the general acceptance of "bad behavior," but there are some other factors as well:…

Thinking clearly is vital. Thinking creatively is ideal. Who argues this? But "critical thinking" as preached in public schools is more a marketing gimmick than an actual pedagogy. So, how do you teach "critical thinking"?

And The Most Hyped Fad in Education Is....

Probably it's something called Critical Thinking.Sounds good. Should be good. Could be good. But let me tell you a little secret. FOR BUSINESS EXECUTIVES AND MILITARY LEADERS

NEW REPORT is directed at leaders of the business and military communities, especially those concerned about the decline of American public schools.  The question is, how can public education be improved?  The trend, unfortunately, is that the Education Establishment pays little attention to society's nominal leaders. Long story short: Commerce and Education are now two separate worlds. That's the reason public schools are such a mess. The educators in charge listen only to each other.…See More

As for the move away from cursive writing, I want to mention a factor that people might not think of. Public schools don't want to teach phonics. They want to teach sight-words, which is an English word considered entirely as a graphic design.…

Taking Sides On Dyslexia

You can find on the Internet an extraordinary number of people who talk about dyslexia as if it’s not only an ultimate reality but some sort of gift from God.

On the other side, you can find people saying that dyslexia is a lie, a hoax, nothing but nonsense.

So what is this thing that people can describe as both night and day?

First of all, there’s no question that the dyslexic kid has a reading problem. The question is whether the kid was born with this…

Quick Report on the State of US Education

Call me cynical but I suspect that most of the education topics we see discussed in the media are merely a distraction. They are designed to keep us from discussing what's really important. Namely, that our Education Establishment does a bad job year after year.

This sad truth needs to be candidly stated, honestly faced, and aggressively corrected.

For a clear view of the national malaise, see brief report on fastpitch;…

Hi Bruce, Caught your article: "The Assault on Math". I would like to remind you of what's possible when our students are properly nourished. Beyond that, it is interesting to note that The NAEP, designed and administered by the Federal Department of EducatIon, is widely considered the gold standad measure of student, achievement, both because it is so rigorous and because it is far less subject to politIcal pressures than state achievment tests. The contrast between the NAEP results in 2009 and those of 2007 show a not-surprising drop in the major cities of the country including NYC.
Unusual leaps in student achievement have caused New York State EducatIon Commissioner David Steiner and our own Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, to call for an overhaul of the state tests and resetting the proficiency bar. We are a nation of testers - which has magnified during the time i've been involved with education. The same is true with our so called healthcare - What we need to do is to look at results and how they are achieved!
May the New Year be kindly to you and yours. Claire WWW.PRESERVEDTOSERVE.COM

Hi Literary Pal, I assert that an important component of improving education begins with every pupil I cordially invite you to visit My Page to check out "award winning" Preserved to Serve which offers irrefutable evidence that we may now have children impoving every year! My son WAS hyper and retarded while my daughter HAD the symptoms of cerebral palsy. On a high level natural lifestyle they succeed beyond the norm. My daughter improved from being a low-birthweight high risk intensive care baby to graduating from LaGuadia High School of Music and Art and The Performing Arts with a scholaship in Engineering Physics and a brown belt in katrate! We may
now have 100% MENSAs! Respectfully, Claire, Featured Member and Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year Representing Healh and Wellness!
