What is meant by temperance?

Some people define "temperance" as a movement against the use of alcoholic beverages. This may have been true in previous times and to some extent is still true. What our society fails to recognize is there should be a stronger movement against the use of illegal drugs. I personally know of nurses who advocate the legalization of marijuana. (It has been legalized in fourteen States already). There is overwhelming research that shows that this illegal drug is harmful to the human body. Most research advocating the use of this drug is biased based in favor of those who wish to legalize it for monetary reasons.
The word temperance is hardly used in this day and age - other than sometimes in relation to "going on a diet".
In the past, it meant abstaining from alcoholic beverages.
A larger view is that we should exercise temperance (self restraint) in all that we do.ie. to be in control.
Overdoing some of the laws of health may present problems - ie. nutritional quantity, exercise, sun exposure, and even water consumption.
In a broader sense, temeprance implies moderation in activity (day or night) limiting excess in any endeavor,
It is entirely possible to live without any drugs - some of us do.

I exercise temperance in my diet, especially during the holidays, it is so easy for one to over indulge. The thought of moderation is the key, keep me focused.
Good for you, Connie!
I like many find such control difficult. What is helping me is the higher the level of nutrition imbibed, the greater the satiation and the less need for more.
On the holidays I struggle when I need to eat somewhat as others. But I am gaining more confidence in doing what I know works best.
And most fortunately, society is becoming more nutrition conscious and less judgmental. If I live long enough we will have a mesh!
