Graduate school............ahhhhhhhh,breathe.

So.....you got accepted to graduate school! Congratulations.....what now. Well get ready to begin a new chapter in your life. I graduated from undergrad in 2005 and began graduate school at the Mayo Clinic in 2006. I am now ending my 3 year and beleive me its been a crazy rollercoaster! To begin, I am origianlly from Texas and moved to Rochester, MN, so the first problem I encountered was the weather! O my, is it cold up here!!! It took me about 2 years to become accustomed to the ice cold weather I had to encounter. I had to go shopping for a new wardrobe(not a bad thing if you love shopping), learned how to warm my car up before I left to school, bought a shovel, and kept active. Take advantage of the weather..learn snow activities, snow tubing, skiing, make snow angels. The next problem was missing family and friends. I know its tough in the beggining but don't worry its harder on your parents than it is on you. Just get a good calling plan, learn how to text message, open up facebook account, or get a web cam. Third, the culture....wait...what culture? Haha, just kidding. San Antonio is filled with life and food and music and dancing, you get the point...whereas Rochester has mainly well, I'm still looking. A good way to find your niche in a new area is join clubs, organizations, groups, in and outside of school. For instance, I joined the Social Justice Ministry at Church, and a member of the Innitiatives to Maximize Student Diversity (IMSD at Mayo Clinic), play sand and indoor volleyball and kickball with Rochester Sports and Rec. There are many things you can do.Finally, school. The classes you will be taking will make you think that you are the dumbest person on the face of the earth. Beleive me, when I was in high school even undergrad I was at the top of the game...straight A's, a couple of B's maybe one C. Now, its thrilling if you can hold your head above the water and get a B. However, if you have a good group of friends and like to do study groups this is the way to go! Also, don't be afraid to go to your professors office and ask questions. They actually like this because it shows them that you are trying.

So my question to you is how did/are you surviving graduate school??

Hello all, I am working on my DBA that is a PHD in Business Administration. It is not easy, but I believe it is worth it. Anyone who can give me some pointers on succeeding with a dissertation, please feel free to give me advice on it.

Well its extremely cold here in Rochester,MN. With school going well but very stressful, its time to ask how do we as students, parents, significant others, or pet lovers handle all these stress? Go out and do something other than school activities!!! Spend quality time with your children or significant other and STOP thinking about what you have on your list of things to do. Go out and walk your pet! Since its freezing cold here......get a new hobby! I just started snow tubing and will begin to learn how to ski soon! (Wish me luck!)

So BE IN THE NOW AND and APPRECIATE ALL that you have in yourlife and BE GRATEFUL for all the blessing you have.

Wow, Ann I congratulate you on what you are doing! It is hard for me as a single young woman to deal with the many frustrations and challenges facing me during this crazy process of obtaining my degree, but you are quite the woman to be able to balance being a student, mother, and wife. This brings up another great point as how to survive Grad school.........

Time management! One of the toughest things to do while your taking courses, studying, and trying to participate in school activities, is making sure to be able to do things you love in life. Like spend time with family and friends....and don't forget to take time for yourself. This may be one of the most important things you can do. Whether it be going for a nice long jog, reading a book you like, drinking a margarita, or taking a nap! Also, if you feel overwhelmed don't be afraid to ask others for help. It may mean to talk with a counselor or see your doctor for stress managment.........remember to not be embarressed about the stress and anxiety you may be having.....this is common among people who continue with secondary education.

Also.....graduate school is not easy.......this is why only about 1% of the population gets their Ph.D! (This is also true for Master's programs as well.)

Well, I graduated with my BS degree in 2008, and actually applied to Graduate School before ending my bachelor's degree and was accepted!!!:) I was very excited and also exhausted from all the work and papers due for the ending of my classes for my BS degree. But I plowed ahead and have continued with my journey. Yes, it has been exhausting, lots of work, but many rewards. A 3.0 average is expected in order to stay in the program. It has been especially tiring at times as I have a family too. I have a husband, a 15 year old daughter and son, who turned 7 years old over the summer. And yes, I agree, you do need a good support group to study with. It will help you a lot as once you get to Graduate School, the explanations are few and far between. You are already supposed to know what to do and if you don't, you expected to be able to figure it out. I enjoy school very much and always have, but I can say, I will be glad when I can graduate!! By the way, I am looking for an internship right now!

I survive with putting in long hours, adapting to whatever I need to, to be able to get assignments done and turned in on time, and do whatever it takes to make it through!! It takes a lot of determination to keep going and not give up. Its very easy to give up and not make it to the end!! But don't, it's all worth it!!!!!!
