Branding is such an important subject! As a new business owner I had never heard of branding prior ot joining Cambridge. Recently I commented on Facebook that during my time on Connect I have progressed from Confusion to Clarity to Confidence in sharing what The Self Rejuvenation Center stands for. Of course, I thought I had arrived; I now realize that there is no such thing and that we may be evolving throughout our lifetimes. I now have a fourth C to add to my collection and that is Courage in the face of disbelief as evidenced by my new post on Filedby at WWW.PRESERVEDTOSERVE.COM which begins:

Branding is very important for a business. It tells the public who you are, what the product is, what your mission statement is, and can include a code of ethics. It also set you apart from your competition, by creating a unique identity for potential customers to see what your product is and why they should be your customer.

Branding can be simple or very complicated. Most people start out with a Logo, ( a unique but simple symbol for their business), and a mission statement for their product and company, product description, reasons why customers should use their product and packaging that will separate them from their competitors for simple recognition.

One must consider the product and the style that works best with the products. For example if you sell coffins you don't use loud colors and festive display type, and in the reverse if you are in the travel business, you don't make your presentation as a business prospective to customers that are wanting to have fun on vacation. Basically you want to design to fit your product. Look at your competitions design, but don't copy them that is not designing but stealing someone else's work. You want to look at the basic concepts of what they did and make something unique from what you have observed. In your observations see what works and dose not work. Make notes what works and dose not work and why.

Also you must keep in mind the demographic of who you are selling to and design accordantly. If the age group is 18 to 25 and middle class you must identify with that crowd, and see what it currently happening with in that age group and observe the design for that group as in trends, and fads, websites are an excellent start, and look at the brick and mortar stores as well for the age group to get a feel for the age group you are selling to and observe the design of the packaging, labels, store signs, and everything else in the store. Make notes of what you think works and dose not work and why. Ask question to people in this age group too (not in stores or by your competition) to see what they like and what they don't like, observe their reactions as well to what you show them and ask them to see if they are just being polite or giving you an honest answer. Once you have your research down, then you can intelligently start creating your own brand. Also a current book on graphic design can help too.

I think this was an excellent review of what branding is for and about. What I have recently encountered is having to downsize websites with too many different categories that only partially match my own brand of being a poet, author, artist, using those talants to heal the broken-hearted. I needed to be practical in being able to also generate an income with my passion. What I came up with is embrasing the concept of "cleansing your mind and your environment" by supporting green power, solar energy to supply the earth with natural energy--Divine Energy that permeates the mind, soul, and world!

Ask yourself:
What am I known for? or What do I want to be known for?
Am I doing what I love? (does your passion show?)
Have I been honest? (are you holding back from fear?)
Do I have a logo that presents myself/company well? (will it stand the test of time?)
Are my colors easily associated with me?
Do I have a GREAT tagline/slogan?
Is it clear what I represent/do?
Have I fully utilized the internet?

**The above are just a few of the questions you should have answers to. Remember to do everything with YOU in mind and don't over complicate things. Above all else, don't overwhelm yourself; do only what you can do and turn everything else over to someone you've screened and trust to handle things as you would.

I am following the threads of this discussion on branding with great interest. I have a new book out, Ask Me No Questions, which deals with domestic violence. The story is true but the book is a novel because of the inherent danger to the real people involved in the story. I feel that I should have an easy time of branding myself and my story because of my knowledge of the subject; I served as an advocate for victims of DV and spoke for various organizations for many years prior to the publication of the novel. Now I need to get back in the loop, so to speak, and contact all those organizations who asked me to speak; let them know the book is finally a reality, and create a market buzz. I also have access to some resources who are creating teee shirts, book bags, and other items to be used as fundraisers for shelters and as freebies for my website. Does all this sound like I'm on the right track?

Take it from someone who is an expert in the field from "experience" as a victim twice, now Victor healed in rhyme from PTSD. If you know the feelings first hand you can offer an opportunity for healing and joy to the population you are seeking by writing expert articles, like myself, through http://www.EzineArticles.com . This will not only give you a broader audience, but is free and will drive the necessary traffic to your website. I created my own websites using my pen name to protect my family. You will have to check out my profile for those details. You need to combine your viral marketing with Internet Marketing. I wrote an article about that too from the resource already given. I am the Vice President of Business Development for IREDHI. I found myself doing the personal branding for the President/Realtor. It was easy because his son is already branded and he has the same name as the father.

Personal Branding is also effective in diffusing negative perceptions or minor activities. My Realtor is also an entertainer when Real Estate is slow. I try to keep his 2 images separate. Real Estate is more professional. Entertainment is more creative.

I agree with you about keeping the two images separate. I just eliminated one of my websites so that it would be more marketable with the remaining two. I think using someone else's name in a Jr. is not honest. Even though it may get attention when you find out that person is not really related it can do more harm than good. I use my own pen name for my own work that is serving me nicely in my "niche". There's alot more to Internet Marketing than meets the eye!

I think in order to participate in a Webinar the information has to be pertinent to your own goals and within your range of IT understanding. I have attended a recent Webinar for photography in relationship to getting true color on your computer that has to be calibrated. There were all sorts of mechanical uploads and do hinkies that left me with a sense of "Why did I sign up for this?"
I like to use my time wisely!
